If you are fed up with the use of Windows 7 and want to upgrade it to Windows 8 or 8.1, it’s not a big deal. All you have to do is to follow simple steps to get what you want. Here is a guide to help you out in up gradation of windows 7 to windows 8 or 8.1.

System requirements for Windows 8/8.1

Processor: should be 1 GHz or faster including support for NX, PAE, and SSE2
RAM: should be 1 GB for 32-bit OS or 2GB for 64-bit OS
HDD: should be 16 GB available for 32-bit OS or 20 GB for 64-bit OS
Graphics card: should be DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver


Check your PC:
If you want to upgrade your windows 7 to windows 8/8.1, you will first have to check compatibility of your PC with Windows 8/8.1. To do this, download Windows 8/8.1 Upgrade Assistant and run it when it is done with checking, it will tell you if your PC can run Windows 8/8.1 or not.

Choose what to keep:

After getting the compatibility report, click NEXT and decide what you want to keep on your PC and what not. If you want to keep your files like photos, documents, movies, movies etc., select PERSONAL FILES.
If you don’t want to save your files, select NOTHING. It is highly recommended to backup your files on an external drive before selection of this option.
PS: On the choice of ‘NOTHING’ option you can still retrieve your files from windows old folder after up gradation.

Buy Windows 8/8.1:

If your PC meets the system requirements according to Upgrade Assistant and is able to run Windows 8.1, then buy Windows 8/8.1 by selecting the option provided by upgrade assistant. You will get an email including a product key after your order is processed. The product key will be automatically entered for you if you will continue through the upgrade process now. Be sure to keep this key at a safe place.

Download Windows 8/8.1:

After you have entered the product key and it has been verified, click NEXT, to start a download of Windows. It will take 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on the speed of your internet to completely download windows installation package. If I case your download is interrupted and you are unable to find a way to resume it, try restarting your PC. Once you have restarted, click the Download Windows icon on your desktop to start the download again.

Install Windows 8.1

After Windows 8/8.1 has downloaded to your PC, select any of the three options below, according to your choice.
Install now. This option is highly recommended for smoothest installation and up gradation.
Install by creating media. This is an advanced installation option and requires a USB flash drive or a blank DVD. It is only recommended for the people who want to install it in a virtual environment or as a dual-boot configuration. Install later from your desktop. On the selection of this option, a shortcut will be created on your desktop from where you can later install Windows on your PC when you feel convenient.
PS: Your PC will restart several times while installation of Windows 8/8.1.


After successful installation of Windows 8.1 on your PC, installs, you’ll be prompted to personalize your PC according to your own choice. Here you will have to choose theme color that would be changeable from the start screen.

Microsoft Account sign-in:

After personalization, you’ll be asked to sign in to your Microsoft account.

OneDrive cloud storage:

This option will appear if you are upgrading Windows 8/8.1 first time on your PC. On the appearance of one drive settings on screen, click NEXT. Photos will be saved to the camera roll folder when you take them with this PC .The default location will be one drive when you create a new document, but you can choose to save it to a location of your choice. A backup copy of your PC settings will be saved to OneDrive by windows.All of these PC settings can be changed later.You can also turn on OneDrive settings which are not usually recommended.

Install updates:

Download and install important updates for a smooth running of your windows. During this, your PC might also need to restart several times to complete the updates.

You’re done

After finalizing your updates, you will be taken to new Windows 8/8.1 start screen.
