Home Remedies to Keep Our Teeth and Gums Clean


Good oral hygiene not only provides you with a bright, beautiful smile but it also prevents cavities and getting you teeth stained. Bad breath is another issue that is caused by poor hygiene. Good oral health contribute a lot towards your overall personality, people looking great with all the glamour in their apparel might loose it all when they give a smile or open their mouth to say something. It is not only the concern of your outlook but your overall health as well.


According to many studies conducted by the experts the oral inflammation and bacteria can cause many health problems in addition to oral issues. These health problems include, kidney diseases, oral cancer, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, strokes and various heart diseases. In women, due to these oral problems there are higher chances of birth of babies with low weight or even pre-term births. And then there is that psychological influence too, unhealthy gums and teeth can affect they way you speak, taste or chew your food, many people tend to run away from socializing. Moreover, good health of your teeth and gums can save you a lot of money because these treatments are not cheap.


Luckily there are some simple solutions to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout your whole life and the first step is to keep them clean which simply means to brush your teeth twice a day at least and flossing after dinner, using a mouth wash once in a day and rinsing your mouth after every meal. Following are some remedies that can help you maintaining your oral hygiene,


Oil Swishing

Also known as oil pulling is a very old practice that prevents tooth decay and provides strength to jaw, gums and teeth by drawing out bacteria. As per the research oil swishing done with sesame oil is very useful for the treatment of gingivitis that is plaque-induces. This can also be done with coconut oil. Simple put 1 tablespoon of oil in your mouth for 20 minutes and swish it around but spit it out and avoid gargling or swallowing. Then rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth as normal. This should be done daily in the morning on an empty stomach.


Green Tea


Natural fluoride, catechins and polyphenols in the tea are helpful in destroying the bacteria that cause gum disease, tooth decay, cavities and bad breath. Just make the tea and drink 3 or 4 cups daily but to quicken the process you should not use any sweetener in the tea. There is sugar-free green tea chewing gum also available in the market.


Indian Lilac / Neem


It also contains antibacterial features and is widely used in many parts of Asia to keep the gums and teeth healthy. You can use a twig from the tree and use it to brush your teeth moreover, grind a couple of lilac leaves to paste and use it as a paste to brush your teeth a few times a week. The juice from the leaves can also be used for this purpose.


Guava Leaves


Guava leaves can be very effective in preventing the periodontal disease. These are antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-plaque and antimicrobial in nature. They are also very useful in the cases of bad breath. Take some well-cleaned guava leaves which are tender and chew them thoroughly then spit them out. These tender guava leaves can also be used as your regular toothpaste if you grind them and you can also prepare a mouthwash for daily use by boiling 5 or 6 guava leaves in a cup of water for 5 minutes approximately.




Turmeric is also be very helpful in maintaining the oral hygiene as it contains the anti-inflammatory and antibacterial characteristics that play a vital role in keeping the teeth and gums clean and free from the infections caused by bacteria. It is also very effective in controlling the plaque and gingivitis. Take 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric powder and a bit of water to it to form a paste and brush your teeth with it for a few times in a week.In another method you can use 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder and half teaspoon each of mustard oil and salt and message your gums and teeth with it daily at least once. In another method boil a cup of water with half teaspoon of turmeric powder and use it as a mouth was after it cools down.
